What is an original lithograph?

Lithography is a printing technique, obtained by inking usually on a limestone and flat-printing stone which allows to create an original work in several copies and in limited circulation. A true work of art, lithography is part of the process of graphic arts.
Many great artists have used this flexible technique to let their imaginations run free. The artist will be able to draw in bold pencil on the stone as on the paper. The litho has no technical difficulty itself.
An original lithography is usually signed and numbered. A lithography may also carry one of the following entries:
BAT: Good to shoot (annotation of the artist himself when he is satisfied with the work)
EA: Artist's event
HC: Out of Commerce
The artists ' events are the property of the artist who can sell them personally. Some artists enhance the colors of EA which give them a rarity and a added value, these original works become unique.
Non-trade is offered to the publishing staff especially to the printer.
There are very few lithographigrapheurs workshops left in France today, but the process is still popular with some contemporary artists, connoisseurs and collectors.

How much does an original lithograph cost?

The price or the estimation of an original lithography depends first of the artist, of its coast, the period or the date of the work but also the presence of the signature of the artist, the number of copies disseminated (and therefore of its rarity) and of course of the state of conservation.

The presence of an authentic signature is not a guarantee of original work! As evidenced by the adventures of the White leaves signed by Dali but considered as fakes.

The famous Galerie Maeght, since always editor of original lithographs by Picasso, Miro, Chagall, Léger and Matisse, prints the lithos of its artists in very small quantities and in limited edition.

The original lithographs can be Chinese from a few tens of euros to several hundred euros for artists wanted such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Foujita, Soulage, Jasper Johns, Alechinsky, Buffet, Sam Francis, Warhol, Nikki de Saint-Phalle, Picasso.

The original lithographs are easily found in auctions at all prices and in specialized galleries, lithos are very present in the art market.
